The summer solstice is fast approaching, so take these songs with you on your journey into the sunshine.
Aemone – «Andalusia» (2022)
Nice electronic house that you can take to the dance floor, barefoot of course. Ethereal and quite subtle vocal samples with clear rhythm so you can’t go wrong.
40 Winks – «40 layers» (It’s the trip, 2011)
This song is also Belgian produced (!), but here we are talking about instrumental hip-hop, which is a genre close to my heart. Jazz, soul and downtempo elements that take you layer by layer (ah, hence the title!) into the core of a laid back atmosphere. Captivating for those who like intricate loops.
Campo – «El sonido de la milonga» (Bajofondo Tango Club, 2003)
Finally we leave the Belgian friterie and move to an Argentinian milonga , where we find one of my favorite songs of all time, and about time it is referred to as one of the most energetic electrotango songs I have come across. Lively, danceable and street-oriented, as it retains clear and playful elements from the other part of the globe (if it’s actually round.. - relax, just press play then). If this one doesn’t bring out the Buenos Aires nostalgia, then I can’t help you.
Dandara, Arutani & Iorie – «Too close [Iorie’s Pink Glasses Remix]» (Heartache, 2017)
A pulsating electronic journey that is over 8 minutes long. It’s hard not to be influenced by the intro and outro voices. Mysterious and somewhat psychedelic, as this introspection is exactly what complements the deep bass that takes the song to new heights. This remix is more downtempo than the original, and hits the spot for the patient listener. Today it is you who gets that joy.
Cuervo cuervo – «La fuerza [Radio edit]» (Las cartas, 2025)
Finally, warm, sunny and delicious folktronica is coming your way. And since the album is like a deck of tarot cards, you’ve just drawn the Strength (sp. La Fuerza). Essential ronroco takes you high into the Andes mountains, well backed up by deep bass lines that keep it down to earth. I think there is more punch in the radio edit than in the long version, so this ends up on repeat, because I really want more than 3 minutes and 17 seconds.)
Q Function – «Since then» (Matching atoms, 2015)
No juju-tracks without a dose of nostalgia and melancholy, and then it’s always pleasant to lean on the sssssmooooth factor in this instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop song that samples the voice of icon Brigitte Bardot. Soft, jazzy elements provide a slightly dreamy experience with a lot of ssssssoouul.
5l33p – «Last Mercer»* (Mercer, 2025)
What. an. album. Can be expected to appear on this year’s album, and hence difficult to select a song. We have now moved into the phonk genre with lo-fi samples and vocal chops over a floating soundscape. Not as aggressive as the other tracks on the album, and a worthy end. for. this. time.
